Alan Shearer has named Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett in his Premier League team of the week.

The Welsh international defender was instrumental in the Magpies 2-2 with Bournemouth on Saturday, and caught the eye with a breathtaking, acrobatic clearance with the game tied at 1-1.

And despite a brace of spectacular goals from Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie, the Toon legend opted to go with the defender as his standout United player.

Shearer’s team of the week was posted to the Premier League’s official Twitter account on Monday evening.

OPINION

It is good to see somebody besides the usual suspects getting recognition for their performance on Saturday. The Magpies were brilliant, aside from a shaky fifteen minute spell in the second half, and although Rondon and Ritchie have taken most of the plaudits in the days since, it really was a team performance. Dummett typified that collective effort, putting in a bold and brave defensive display that culminated in that last gasp clearance midway through the second half. At the time it was important, but come the final whistle it was even more significant, and in the battle to avoid the drop, who knows just how vital Saturday’s point could prove to be. If the Magpies beat relegation, and with each passing week it looks more and more like a realistic possibility, then it will be moments like Dummett’s clearance that are looked back on as crucial turning points in their season.
