Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has been a rock in the centre of the Magpies defence this season, and his performance for Switzerland on Saturday has only reinforced that view.

He was not one of the players who got on the scoresheet in this 2-0 win over Georgia on Saturday night, but it is safe to say that the 27-year-old was at his usual impressive best for his country as well.

Schar did take an almighty knock to the head which knocked him unconscious after a collision with a Georgian player, but after being given treatment, he got back on his feet and carried on.

That is exactly the type of resilience that Newcastle need in their defence, and many of the fans are no doubt over the moon that one of their players put out such an assured display for their country. Fans are often nervous about what the international break may do to their players, but there certainly was no signs of a decline in form from the defender.

The 6ft 1in tall [Transfermarkt] ace was at his best at the back for the Swiss, and he also played a vital part in his teammates getting the two vital goals. Is there anything that this player cannot do? At the moment, there seems like there is not. He is simply undroppable for them.

There is no doubt that he will gather quite a lot of interest from the Premier League and possibly even abroad in the summer, and that will not come as a surprise for Rafa Benitez. His form has been exceptional, especially recently. However, Newcastle should not let him leave under any circumstances.

One thing is for sure, Schar still has a vital role to play for United in the season run-in, and that has only been reinforced by this – almost – jaw dropping display for Switzerland on Saturday.
