Newcastle United centre back Fabian Schar has rocketed to the top spot of Sky Sports‘ weekly Premier League power rankings.

The 27-year-old produced an unbelievable performance in his team’s 2-0 win over Burnley on Tuesday night, scoring a stunning long range strike to put the Magpies in front.

That display has put him on top of the broadcaster’s detailed statistics-based ranking of the Premier League’s top players after every round of fixtures.

The Switzerland international has claimed top spot ahead of the likes of Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette.

OPINION

When you look at the names that Schar beat to the number one ranking it really hammers home just how impressive the Newcastle superstar was against Sean Dyche’s side. He was absolutely phenomenal, both defensively and going forward. He capped it all off, of course, with one of the finest goals the Magpies will score all season – and he’s probably only competing against himself for that honour! The goal was superb and it was just what Newcastle needed to break down a stubborn Burnley backline. That technical ability is what sets Schar apart from his fellow centre backs. He is capable of bringing the ball out from the back, spraying passes around the pitch and thundering home long distance strikes. There’s a really nice balance between Newcastle’s central defensive trio at the moment, but Schar might be the most important of the three to Rafael Benitez’s team. He deserves this number one ranking because he was superb on Tuesday.
