Newcastle United centre-back Fabian Schar has been ruled out of Switzerland’s clash against Denmark on Tuesday, it has been confirmed.

The Swiss national team’s official Twitter account announced on Monday afternoon that Schar, 27, will not feature in the Euro 2020 qualifier due to a head injury he sustained in the win over Georgia on Saturday.

The tweet says that Switzerland will “have to do without” the Magpies defender.

Schar was knocked unconscious in the 2-0 victory, but was allowed to complete the 90 minutes.

OPINION

Schar should have been taken off immediately after it was known that he had been knocked unconcious. It was extremely dangerous and irresponsible of the Swiss to allow the defender to keep on playing in a game that they were widely expected to win, with or without the Newcastle player. Hopefully there are no long-term issues for the former Deportivo centre-back and he will be available for Newcastle in their next game, but for the avoidance of risk, he should probably not play for a week or so just so that everyone knows that he’s fully capable of playing again. Schar has been a key player for Newcastle this season, appearing 22 times across all competitions, but even if Rafa Benitez wants him to start against Arsenal next Monday, he should not risk his health. Newcastle should be furious with the Swiss FA for not taking better care of a player who clearly should not have played after such a heavy blow to the head.
