To say that Newcastle United struck gold with Salamon Rondon’s capture from West Brom would be a pretty fair statement – apart from the fact the Magpies are only in temporary possession of the Venezuelan.

It has become plain and obvious why manager Rafael Benitez wanted the South American star to lead the line at St James’ Park – he is powerful, intelligent and incredibly hard working, not to mention having a keen eye for goal.

He really has grown into his position up front and the Toon Army would love to see him stay on board for the long-term, with his temporary stay coming to an end in the summer.

The Chronicle report that Benitez is desperate to see him remain on Tyneside and that a £16.5million fee will get the job done if West Brom remain in the Championship.

However, it is stated that Everton are also keen and that will no doubt strike fear into hearts of the St James’ Park faithful – although a crucial advantage in the hunt should give them hope.

As claimed by the Chronicle, Rondon has made Newcastle his first choice should he depart the Hawthorns for good in the summer and while that should give Benitez and the fans belief, they still have Mike Ashley running the finances.

Having a player want to sign for Newcastle over everyone else does not come around very often, especially not one of Rondon’s quality, and so missing out on his capture would have the fans raging beyond belief.

It is all about money for the owner and Rondon might not make financial sense to him but he makes footballing sense to everyone who has any sort of idea about the game – and failing to take advantage of the striker’s desire to stay would be one massive blunder for the Magpies.
