Newcastle United’ hierarchy are willing to promise manager Rafael Benitez a marquee signing this summer if he commits to a new contract with the club, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the Magpies are keen to see the Spaniard commit his future to the club and that the former Liverpool boss wants to sit down for structured contract talks.

It is thought that Benitez will be permitted to bring in another “big money” Miguel Almiron-style signing if he agrees to continue his stay at St James’ Park.

The Newcastle chief will seek concrete assurances over the club’s transfer plans, though, having seen the Almiron deal drag on for several months.

OPINION

It’s no surprise to see the Newcastle board scramble to come up with ways to entice Benitez to remain at the club. The Magpies’ performance this season has shown just how important the Spaniard is to the Newcastle cause and there would be a riot amongst the supporters if he is allowed to fly the nest at the end of the season. So it makes sense that they would be willing to promise him something like this. While it will please Benitez to be able to spend a bit more money, he will likely be concerned that just one Almiron-type deal is one the table. It’s not going to be ideal if he has a wad of cash to spend on one player but not much on anyone else. If he’s allowed to spend £20m+ on one player but £5m or so on all the other players he wants to bring in then he’s not going to be happy. That’s likely why he’s seeking more structured talks with the Newcastle board, so we’ll have to see how this one plays out.
