Newcastle United supporters group Wor Flags are planning to create the largest banner ever seen in European football, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that plans are being put in place for a 75m wide by 70m tall banner that would cover the entire Gallowgate Stand at St James’ Park. It would weigh 36 stone.

That would make it a European football first as the Magpies supporters attempt to make history. The venture will be entirely funded by supporters, with the names of every donator set to be included on the banner.

The Newcastle fans are famed for their loyal support, and they now appear set to take that to the next level.

OPINION

This is quite something, isn’t it? To have a banner the size of an entire stand would be incredible and a wonderful achievement for Wor Flags who are in the process of designing it as we speak. The Newcastle supporters are some of the most fervent in the country and so it’s no surprise that they are the club planning this undertaking. It is a bit of a surprise that a team like Borussia Dortmund or Celtic – teams with equally rabid fanbases – have never produced a banner of this size. However, they may have had some big ones but Newcastle are simply trying to produce the largest one ever seen in Europe. If they can get it done then it would be fantastic to witness, but you have to wonder about what will be on it. The best bet is some sort of message to hated owner Mike Ashley. To be fair, that is something even the seemingly oblivious Sports Direct tycoon wouldn’t be able to miss.
