Newcastle United will no doubt be aiming to prove themselves in this summer’s transfer market after the stellar signing of Miguel Almiron in January.

He proved that the club can compete for some of the best players around, and they must continue to demonstrate that they are capable of signing the players that they want.

One target they failed to get last summer was Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend. The Magpies were credited with an interest in the 27-year-old at the time, according to South London Press, but since then, things have changed.

The dazzler stated back in August that that he wanted to remain in South London “for many years”, hence putting an end to Newcastle’s pursuit of the flyer.

“There is always gossip surrounding myself every summer but I don’t really pay much attention to it. I’m happy here and hopefully I can be here for many years,” he said, as quoted by Sky Sports at the time.

However, despite this firm stance from the winger, Newcastle must reignite their interest in him and attempt to lure him to St James’ Park again this summer. He is just what they need – a lively, sprightly winger who has the ability to make things happen.

His combination with the likes of Almiron would be a sight to behold, which is why Newcastle must focus on a swoop for him. Townsend’s spell at the club may not have gone completely the way he wanted the first time, but there is no doubt that he would be able to redeem himself if he arrived for a second spell.

United’s attack is in need of revitalising, and Townsend is just the answer. Newcastle need fresh ideas, and he can certainly provide that in abundance.

Many Newcastle fans will drool if Rafa Benitez makes this signing and given he may be in a position to make some demands if Mike Ashley wants him to sign a new deal, the manager should reignite the pursuit of Townsend.
