Newcastle United appear to have found the number nine they’ve been waiting for in West Bromwich Albion loanee Salomon Rondon.

However, there is precious little behind the Venezuelan in the striking pecking order at St James’ Park – in terms of out and out centre forwards there’s only really Rondon and Joselu. The latter, of course, is no one’s idea of a reliable Premier League frontman.

Rondon, as everyone knows, is scheduled to return to the Hawthorns at season’s end. Rafael Benitez should absolutely do everything he can to keep the 29-year-old on Tyneside, but even if the Spaniard succeeds in bringing Rondon back he should be looking to bring another striker in come the summer.

Luckily for the Magpies they have already identified the man to take their attack to the next level. The Northern Echo claimed in December that Newcastle were preparing to make a January move for Aston Villa loan star Tammy Abraham.

Obviously that switch never came to fruition and, in fact, the youngster was much closer to joining Wolverhampton Wanderers than he ever was to moving to the North East.

Ultimately, though, he elected to remain at Villa Park, where he has excelled on loan from Premier League heavyweights Chelsea. However, it would appear unlikely that he has any real future at Stamford Bridge. The only thing that might rule out a permanent summer exit is the Blues’ impending transfer ban.

However, they still have Gonzalo Higuain and Olivier Giroud on the books, so you’d imagine they’d be open to filling their coffers through the sale of Abraham.

Newcastle should do whatever it takes to bring the 21-year-old in. He is exactly what they need, and the thought of him linking up with Rondon in the Magpies attack is positively salivating.

The Englishman has bagged 21 goals in another tremendous stint in the second tier this term. Now that he’s developed even more as a player you would imagine he’d be ready for the step up to the top flight.

This is a signing that would be met with instant approval from the Toon Army. Indeed, it’s a potential deal that would surely have the St James’ Park crowd roaring with delight.
