OPINION

Many Newcastle fans were no doubt in meltdown when news emerged about Sean Longstaff being ruled out for the rest of the season with injury.

The 21-year-old has been ruled out since the Magpies’ 2-0 loss to West Ham earlier this month after colliding with Robert Snodgrass in a challenge, which was certainly a shame after the leaps and bounds he had come on since January.

He was no doubt on the brink of an England call-up this month before his injury, and deservedly so.

However, all supporters will love what under-23s coach Ben Dawson has said about the young star’s injury, and it will certainly give them hope about the swiftness of his recovery.

“I sent him a message at the time saying: ‘You aren’t normally injured!’ So I would imagine the rehab will be quicker than most. I don’t think they’ll take any risks with him though,” the Magpies senior figure told the Chronicle.

The fact that Dawson thinks that Longstaff’s recovery will be a lot quicker than most is definitely something for the fans to cheer about, and it is definitely a step in the right direction. They want to see the club’s hottest prospect back on his feet and doing what he does best, and it could come quicker than expected if this claim is anything to go by.

Rafa Benitez will surely want Longstaff back as soon as it is possible, as his lack of presence has been felt since he was sidelined. The likes of Mo Diame have come in for him, but it is safe to say that it has not been the same.

Some will argue that Longstaff will face an uphill battle trying to get back into the first team when he comes back, but that should not be a problem in the slightest after the season the fan favourite has had.
