The last thing Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez needs to contend with is an injury to one of his first team stars.

Centre-back Fabian Schar suffered a blow to the head in Switzerland’s match against Georgia at the weekend, and he was allowed to play on after receiving some treatment.

However, Switzerland and Newcastle have agreed that Schar should miss their upcoming fixture with Denmark on Tuesday following his head injury, as confirmed by the country’s official Twitter account.

It says that Switzerland will have to “do without” one of their key defenders.

The 27-year-old is a key feature in the Magpies first team and he has been a rock in the defence recently. He has shown many elements to his game, showing that he can go forward effectively whilst also sticking to his defensive duties in an able manner.

This is why many Newcastle fans will surely be sweating buckets over this latest update. He should have not been allowed to continue on Saturday after such an injury, and it remains to be seen whether he will be available for their upcoming games.

If he is absent, that means that Federico Fernandez may have to fill in for him. Based on his last display against Bournemouth, this is not something that the supporters will be too pleased about. He struggled to keep up with the onslaught of the Cherries’ attack that afternoon, so how on earth is he supposed to cope if called upon for the next few games.

Benitez is no doubt concerned about this update too. It means that one of his key players could be missing., and that could have a detrimental effect on their results. What’s more, Switzerland’s decision to let him play on could have even worse effects later along the line.

Either way, many of the United fans are going to be sweating over the £40,000-a-week [Spotrac] star, as he is crucial to their success.
