OPINION

There are few rivalries in European football as intense or bitter as the one between Newcastle United and Sunderland. The Tyne Wear derby is hotly contested and fiercely fought, and both sets of fans love nothing more than winding the other one up. Rarely though, do members of the board get involved. Stewart Donald, Sunderland chairman, broke that role on Saturday morning, however, by choosing to give a little bit back when baited by a Toon fan on Twitter. The Black Cats’ owner claimed that he knew very little about the Magpies because they are much smaller down south compared to his side, and United fans weren’t too happy with his cheeky dig. Most called him out for being blatantly delusional, while others were left straight up angry about his comments. The thing is though, there can’t be too many complaints from Geordie quarters. If you’re going to take the time to antagonise an opposition chairman on Twitter, you can’t be to upset if he bites back. At the end of the day, he is only human, and he has a right to defend his club. All things considered, it’s just banter, but sometimes it’s better to say nothing at all.
