OPINION
Football can be a cruel, cruel game. Imagine getting to Wembley, taking the lead, scoring a last gasp equaliser in extra time to send your fans into delirium, and then getting beat by a single strike in a penalty shootout. You’d be gutted. Unless it happened to your bitterest rivals, in which case you’d be absolutely over the moon. That was the case for Newcastle United supporters on Sunday as they saw Sunderland suffer an EFL Trophy final defeat to Portsmouth. As luck would have it, their side flew down to the capital that same afternoon ahead of their Premier League clash with Arsenal on Monday night, and the club’s media department were quick to post a tweet letting the Toon Army know just how “glorious” a day it was down south. Whether that was intentionally aimed at the Black Cats, only they will know, but one thing is for sure, Magpies fans took it as a clear jibe at their local rivals and chose to pile in wholeheartedly on the Mackems. The rivalry in the north east is so strong that this will have felt like a win for the Toon Army, and supporters will celebrate it like a victory for their beloved United.
