OPINION

On the most part Newcastle United wing back Matt Ritchie certainly didn’t enjoy his finest afternoon against old team Bournemouth in the Magpies’ 2-2 draw on Saturday. It was obviously an emotional day for the Scotland international and you just wonder whether it might have got to him a little bit. He wasn’t completely terrible, but his overall contribution to the game was pretty poor up until he scored the late equaliser. His corner kick delivery, as you can see below, was utterly woeful. Here is a professional footballer, with a pretty decent left foot mind, who seemingly cannot beat the first man or produce a cross that gets anywhere near one of his team mates. That’s just not good enough, particularly when there are tall, powerful players like Salomon Rondon and Federico Fernandez in the box awaiting the delivery. Ultimately Ritchie scored the goal that secured Newcastle a point at the Vitality Stadium, but his overall performance cannot be forgotten even if his late screamer is what will live long in the memory.
