It’s never to early for the rumour mill to start churning, and with the summer transfer window already creeping up on the horizon you can expect a plethora of mooted targets to be linked with clubs up and down the country.

Newcastle United went relatively big in January, and if early whispers are to be believed, they could be willing to do so again in the summer.

According to The People (Sunday March 24, page 47), the Magpies are keen on a move for Hoffenheim striker Joelinton, with the Bundesliga demanding a club record £40 million for his services.

Now, there will be many Toon fans who turn their nose up at that price, and the prospect of Mike Ashley paying it, but as was proved with their move for Miguel  Almiron in January, even the biggest stars at the most resolute of clubs are open to negotiation.

A much bigger spanner in the works, however, could be the Brazilian’s latest comments about his own transfer status.

As quoted in the Chronicle (8.06), the 22-year-old said: “I have a contract here, whether we are in Europe or not, that has no influence.

“I will continue to play here, with or without Champions League football.

“I’m very happy here and happy to play for Hoffenheim.”

As far as transfer comments go, that seems like a fairly decisive one, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the Magpies’ pursuit has to be over.

Sometimes players say things they mean, but more often than not, they say things to keep fans happy.

Joelinton is never going to come out and say “actually, I’d love to leave as soon as possible”, and if he did, you’d have to wonder if he is the sort of player you want playing for your side.

Clearly he is committed to performing for the Germans, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t be persuaded to change his mind in a few months time.

If the Toon Army finish the season well and lay on the charm, they might still land their man.
