Newcastle United may struggle to sell attacker Dwight Gayle in the summer as it could be financially difficult for the club to move him on, according to Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas.

The reliable reporter shared that he didn’t think the 28-year-old had a future at the Magpies and revealed how the club had to give the forward an incentive in order to go on loan to West Bromwich Albion.

Douglas claimed that the Magpies upped Gayle’s wages ahead of him going to West Brom and implied that due to his lucrative pay packet it may see the player hard to get rid off.

“I don’t think Gayle does (have a future),” said Douglas in an interview with Birmingham Mail.

“It’s my understanding Newcastle upped his wages to give him an incentive to leave the club (he didn’t want to go) on loan so while Rafa Benitez may want to move on, it may be financially difficult for them to move him on.”

OPINION

It seems Gayle was keen to stay at St James Park and that’s hardly a surprise. The 28-year-old no doubt believed he was capable of playing in the Premier League this season and wasn’t thrilled at the idea of going to West Brom with them situated in the Championship. While Gayle had to be extra-motivated to leave the Magpies, it hasn’t seen him not putting in 100% effort at the Baggies. In fact the 28-year-old is having a fantastic campaign at the Championship club as he has scored an impressive 16 goals in 31 outings this season. Gayle clearly is able to score goals for fun in the Championship but when you look at his record in England’s top-flight; it’s clear the Magpies can do better. While there will no doubt be a whole host of Championship sides keen on signing Gayle in the summer, you do feel that the majority of them won’t want to give him Premier League wages.
