Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett has been named as one of the Premier League’s most underrated players in an article by the Daily Mail.

The 27-year-old was selected by national newspaper journalist Craig Hope after the Mail’s reporters were asked to name the top flight player they think most flies under the radar.

Hope states that Dummett is arguably the best defender at St James’ Park and that Rafael Benitez’s side always look better when the Welsh international plays.

“I’ll go with a player who I see every week in my role as our North East man,” shared the Mail journalist.

“The Newcastle defender said in an interview last season that fans always used to tell him he was ‘s****’.

“Not anymore. When Dummett plays Newcastle look better and benefit from his assured presence.

“He is arguably the best defender at the club and, when you consider the likes of Jamaal Lascelles are valued at £20million, it shows you why he is underrated.”

The Magpies star was joined by the likes of Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard, Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matt Doherty as one of the division’s most underrated players.

OPINION

There’s no doubt that Dummett is one of the most underrated players at Newcastle. He is an extremely hard worker who gives his all for the team and has improved hugely over the years. Once a figure of ridicule on Tyneside, he is now Benitez’s Mr. Reliable. You can plug the Welshman in at centre back, left back or left wing back and he will do a good job, with his versatility providing the Newcastle boss with solutions to the toughest of tactical problems. His recent performances against Everton and Bournemouth have been outstanding and showed just why he is so important to this Magpies team. As Hope says he is arguably the best pure defender at the club. Fabian Schar may be a better all-round centre half, while Jamaal Lascelles is certainly more bruising, but Dummett combines their best qualities with unrivalled work rate and consistency. Certainly he is more underrated than the likes of Bernardo and Lingard, that’s for sure.
