Newcastle United midfielder Mo Diame is hardly a spring chicken, is he?

The 31-year-old has not been consistent enough this season for the Magpies, that is a no-brainer. He has shown glimpses of decent form, but just not enough.

At the moment, he is enjoying an extended run in the team due to Sean Longstaff sustaining an injury.

The 21-year-old was well ahead of him in the pecking order before this, and rightly so. Diame was showing too many signs of bad form and inconsistency. Longstaff, on the other hand, offered fresh ideas, and most importantly, a fresh pair of legs.

Diame may have been a loyal servant to Newcastle in the past, but it is going beyond that now. His decent showing in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth was a promising sign, but it definitely does not mean that he is the future of the team.

The Daily Star reported earlier this month that Diame had attracted suitors such as Crystal Palace and Brighton amid his contract ending this summer. However, he looks likely to trigger the extension on it, as he is likely to start Newcastle’s remaining games.

Nevertheless, this does not mean that Diame cannot leave. He needs to make way for fresh faces and new talent, and anyway, when Longstaff comes back from his injury, it is imperative the Magpies do not block his route back to the first team.

Diame must recognise himself that the likelihood of him getting games when his teammate returns. Surely he should just cut his losses and move on this summer?

In all honesty, Diame is just not he same midfielder we have seen do well in the last few seasons

Right now, he is just plodding along. The 2016 signing will naturally crave the need to play regularly, so he must make the most of any opportunities that could come his way in the summer.
