Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff is attracting interest from clubs in the Bundesliga, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims Hertha Berlin, Schalke and RB Leipzig were all ready to pounce on the 21-year-old if the Magpies didn’t tie him down to a long-term contract. However, the club avoided disaster by doing just that in November.

Longstaff’s impressive run in Rafael Benitez’s team prior to his recent injury has now attracted the interest of other Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur (Source: The Guardian).

It goes without saying that the Magpies will be keen to keep the midfielder at all costs moving forward.

OPINION

It’s no surprise that with Longstaff’s contract set to run out in the summer – prior to him signing an extension – clubs from Germany were keen to make a move for him in January on a pre-contract deal. That would have been incredibly smart business from them and would have continued the recent trend of young English talents moving to the Bundesliga. It’s worked out well for Jadon Sancho, while Reiss Nelson has also excelled on loan at Hoffenheim. There’s no doubt that had Longstaff agreed to a move over there that he would have done extremely well for any of the aforementioned teams. However, Newcastle were smart to get his future sorted out earlier in the campaign and he has gone on to enjoy a breakthrough season in the Magpies first team. The challenge now for the club is to keep him out of the clutches of the likes of Tottenham, such has been Longstaff’s meteoric rise since the turn of the year.
