Young striker Thomas Allan has been training with Newcastle United’s first team this week, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that Rafa Benitez has called up the 19-year-old due to his impressive form for the Under-23s side.

The Newcastle-born forward has scored two goals and supplied two assists in Premier League 2 this season and it is understood that he has been given the chance to show what he’s made in first team training week due to a number of players being away on international duty.

OPINION

We are yet to see Allan in action for the Magpies first team, but judging by this update, it might not be long before Benitez hands him his senior debut. Allan is 19-years-of-age and is a boyhood Newcastle fan, so it would be great if the Tyneside club finally starts to produce more young players. Sean Longstaff and Paul Dummett have been the only players to have risen through the ranks at St James’ Park to become regular first team players in the last few years, and for a club with the reach and the size of Newcastle, that isn’t enough. Allan has impressed in the Under-23s and hopefully he has impressed in training this week and can become a good back-up option in the Premier League soon enough. If not, it may be a good idea to send him out on loan to get some senior experience. As long as he joins a club on loan that treats him better than Blackpool did with Elias Sorensen, then there should be no issues.
