Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has issued a jubilant one word response to his old team’s late equaliser against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Wing back Matt Ritchie struck late with a stunning effort to ensure that the Magpies would be leaving the Vitality Stadium with a share of the points, and Shearer was delighted with his goal.

“Strriiiiiiikkke,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

The former England international won’t have been the only Geordie thrilled with Ritchie’s hit, with Newcastle seemingly deserving of at least a point on Saturday.

OPINION

What a return to the Vitality Stadium this must have been for Ritchie. To be honest, the Scotland international was pretty poor for large portions of the game, with his corner kick delivery particularly underwhelming. But, at the end of the day, he made a decisive impact with a stunning volley to rescue a point for the Magpies. It’s no surprise to see Shearer react in this way. We all know how dearly he loves Newcastle and he’s always thrilled when they score a quality goal like this one. ‘Strike’ has become something of a catchphrase for the Geordie legend after he produced a similar refrain when reacting to a Fabian Schar wonder-goal earlier this season. All in all, Newcastle deserved to get a point and that’s what made the moment so sweet. It wasn’t a smash and grab from Rafael Benitez’s side, but a well-deserved point after a batting encounter.
