Alan Shearer has praised Newcastle United youngster Sean Longstaff, describing the midfielder as “very, very good”.

The 21-year-old featured in the Magpies’ 1-1 draw with Wolves on Monday night – his fifth consecutive league start for Rafa Benitez’s side since making his debut in a cameo appearance against Liverpool on Boxing Day.

Writing on Twitter after the match, Shearer retweeted a Gary Lineker post that read: “What an impressively mature performance from Sean Longstaff. Another young English talent making huge strides in the Premier League.”

The Newcastle legend then added: “Agreed. He’s been very very good.”

OPINION

In next to no time, Longstaff has established himself as a vital player for the Toon Army. His domineering performances in the middle of the park, combined with his economical use of the ball and willingness to pick a forward pass, have been a large factor in the Magpies really turning a corner in recent weeks, and with him in the team they look a lot closer to becoming the assured side that Benitez will want them to be. In many ways, the injury crisis that led to his breakthrough has been a blessing in disguise, having allowed the Toon to give a chance to one of the most exciting young players they have had in many a year. It’s no exaggeration to suggest that if h carries on at this rate with this level of performance, Longstaff could find himself in Gareth Southgate’s national team plans in the relatively near future.
