Newcastle United player Ayoze Perez has had a bit of resurgence lately, but the same cannot be said about his display against Burnley on Tuesday.

Rafa Benitez’ side secured a vital 2-0 win over the Clarets after goals from Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schar, but Perez stood out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of his teammates.

It is a shame to see his form go to pot in this game, as he had only just worked his way back into the hearts of the Newcastle fans after such a dismal start to the season – for once, he was contributing to the attack and playing positively.

The 25-year-old did not register a single shot on target for the entire game, and to be honest, he just looked like the player who disappointed at the start of the campaign, and this is not good news for him personally.

To look like a completely different player after such a promising run of form is simply not good enough, so there is no doubt that he is destined for the chopping block after this performance.

Perhaps this allows Yoshinori Muto to get his foot in the door once again and be in serious contention to replace him in the starting XI?

The fans definitely do not want to see the £45,000-a-week [Spotrac] player revert back to his old ways after doing so well, and nor does Benitez for that matter.

Yes, admittedly he did work tirelessly throughout the evening on Tuesday, but this is absolutely pointless if he did not make anything happen – after all, how can you not register a single shot despite putting in the effort?

If anything, this bad display is rather worrying for Benitez, as it means that he may be resigned to replacing him with Muto, who has not had much game time this season.

Either way, Perez looked a shadow of himself on Tuesday, and he must be axed.
