OPINION

A report in The Times on Saturday claimed that former Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner and current Celtic chief Brendan Rodgers are in the frame to replace Rafael Benitez at Newcastle United if he leaves the club at the end of the season. The news has gone down like a lead balloon with the majority of the club’s fans. Obviously their preference would be for Benitez to remain in his post, that goes without saying, but they don’t seem to have warmed to the idea of either of these two men taking over from him. The antipathy towards Rodgers, in particular, seems strange. The Northern Irishman performed miracles with Swansea City, overachieved with a pretty poor Liverpool squad and has enjoyed unprecedented dominance with Celtic. For him to be dismissed like this is quite baffling. Wagner, on the other hand, struggled in the top flight with more money at Huddersfield than Benitez has had at Newcastle. The fans’ reaction makes sense there. Still, let’s all hope Benitez stays and we don’t have to worry about any of this.
