Newcastle United midfielder Jacob Murphy was no doubt sent out on loan to West Brom for the rest of the season in order to get more playing time under his belt.

He has made two appearances for the Baggies since arriving at the Hawthorns, and it would look like he was off to a blistering start after netting his first goal for them in the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

However, as they say, looks can often be deceiving, as this was definitely the case for the 23-year-old that evening.

In the lead up to the goal, Murphy had a shocker of a game and was really wasteful with his crosses in the early stages of the match – so it was a surprise that it was him who got West Brom off the mark.

Nevertheless, this display does not bode well for Murphy, and he must step up to the plate as soon as possible to show that he is worthy of going back to Newcastle with a career still in tact.

If he does not manage to do that and is considered a flop for the remainder of the season, then his career with the Magpies will just go down the drain.

He has proved numerous times this season that he is capable of moments of magic – after all, he has made nine appearances in the Premier League for Newcastle this term – so he must replicate those moments in order to get the West Brom fans on his side as well as United boss Rafa Benitez.

If he performs badly for the rest of the campaign then West Brom will not want to extend his stay beyond his current loan spell, where he will then return to Newcastle and find himself on the bench as a result.

The 5ft 8in [Transfermarkt] player has a few months to demonstrate that he is worthy of a future with the Toon, because if he performs like he did on Tuesday, then it looks very bleak indeed.
