Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles has admitted that he apologised to goalkeeper Martin Dubravka for his outburst during the Magpies 1-1 draw with Wolves on Monday night.

The Slovakian stopper was at fault for Willy Boly’s 95th minute equaliser, failing to deal with a cross effectively, and was read the riot act by his skipper over the incident.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, as quoted by the Chronicle, Lascelles has since admitted that he was in the wrong.

He said: “On the pitch there and then, I was just angry with everything.

“It wasn’t necessarily to do with him, it was just to do with everything. They scored at that minute but when I looked back at it, it was as clear as anything that it was a foul.

“So I apologised to him and I shouldn’t really be doing that to him. I hold my hands up but at the same time I’ve got a job to do.

“I haven’t got the armband because I’m technically the best or gifted. It’s because I’m honest and I’m hard-working. I won’t change in that aspect.”

OPINION

Players get frustrated. It’s part and parcel of the game, and when your goalkeeper has just conceded a completely avoidable goal to ship two vital points then it’s understandable that Lascelles lost his cool. That being said, it doesn’t make it right, and it’s refreshing to hear the captain come out and hold his hands up. If any other Newcastle player had done it it would have been bad enough, but for the captain to be the one who went in on Dubravka, it really doesn’t look too great. On one hand it reflects Lascelles’ passion, and nobody will knock him for that, but on the other it shows a lack of discipline, especially given the fact that Dubravka will have known better than anybody that he shouldn’t be making mistakes like that. Looking ahead, it’s good that the whole thing has been swept under the carpet, however, and you would hope that the Magpies’ defensive unit can be stronger from now on as a consequence.
