Newcastle United legend Shay Given has claimed that it would be ‘best for everyone’ if Mike Ashley cut his losses and just sold the club.

The Magpies completed a club record transfer for Paraguayan international Miguel Almiron last week, but the ex-Republic of Ireland stopper is unconvinced that it heralds a change for the Toon’s recruitment policy.

Speaking to talkSPORT, as quoted in the Chronicle (13.20), he said: “It’s a great football club Newcastle and I just wish they could sell the club and get new investors in and move the club forward because it just seems to be the same old story every season.

“Of course, last week was different – they had a record signing and that excited every one in the city – but at the same time is that just a short-term thing for maybe for Rafa to sign a new contract?

“It seems to always be about politics at Newcastle and it’s no secret that Mike Ashley wants to sell the football club. I think it would be best for everyone if he could just do that and move the club forward again with some new owners.”

OPINION

There’ll be no end to the misery and disillusionment on Tyneside until Mike Ashley has sold Newcastle United. One big money signing and prospective attempts to retain the services of Rafa Benitez will go part way to providing a temporary respite in the disgruntlement, but the sad reality is that there is something fundamentally rotten at the core of the club, and until Ashley relinquishes power, that won’t change. The relationship between owner and fan, and potentially even owner and manager, looks irreparable at this stage, and given the choice, there’s no doubting who the Toon faithful would rather oust. That being said, Ashley is a stubborn man, and has supposedly been on the cusp of selling up on numerous occasions before. Hopes are briefly heightened and then come crashing back down to earth with a thud, and it’s gotten to a point now where supporters will not believe he is going until there is a new chairman holding a scarf above his head outside St. James’ Park. On that day there will be parades through the centre of the Toon.
