Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has praised Newcastle United youngster Sean Longstaff for his performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.

The 21-year-old produced another remarkable display that belied his years as the Magpies were cruelly pegged back by a late Willy Boly goal in their 1-1 draw at Molineux.

Despite the late sucker punch Lineker was in huge admiration of Longstaff: “What an impressively mature performance from Sean Longstaff,” he said on his personal Twitter account.

“Another young English talent making huge strides in the Premier League,” he finished.

OPINION

Lineker is spot on, here, it was another tremendous performance from the home-grown star against Wolves. It’s incredible how seamlessly the youngster has slotted into this Newcastle team, and he has very much made that central midfield position his own. There’s really no dropping him now, he has been that good. He bossed the midfield on Monday, working hard alongside Isaac Hayden to limit Wolves’ offensive forays. He was typically calm in possession, using the ball well when he got it and trying to make things happen for the Magpies. He was the best player on the pitch and was rightfully awarded the Man of the Match award. As Lineker says, he is one of a number of young English talents showing what they can do in the Premier League. The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell and co. are impressing hugely and Longstaff has certainly joined that group.
