Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is back in full training after suffering with a thigh injury, the club have confirmed on their official website.

The 26-year-old star has only mustered up eight starts in the Premier League for the entirety of the season so far due to ongoing injury problems, with his last outing for the Magpies coming on January 5 against Blackburn in the FA Cup.

The website adds that Shelvey took part in some of Wednesday’s training session at the club’s training camp in Spain.

OPINION

Having Shelvey back will no doubt be a boost for Newcastle, although it must be noted that he has not performed very well in the games he has featured in this season. His contribution has not been that positive, and it is safe to say that he has not been missed recently due to the emergence of Sean Longstaff. The emergence of Ki-sung Yueng also means that his first team chances will be limited when he does eventually return, and it remains to be seen whether the fans will welcome him back with open arms. However, the impact he has made in the last few seasons should stand him in good stead in the view of boss Rafa Benitez, and his eventual return will certainly cause a selection headache. Either way, him edging closer to playing is still a major boost for the team, as it gives them a lot more options to choose from.
