Sometimes versatility can be a hindrance as much as it can be a help.

When a new player comes in to a club along with the promise that he can play in several positions, it can leave many wondering as to where he is most effective.

That could very easily be the case with Newcastle United’s new poster boy Miguel Almiron.

The Paraguayan international can play in either wing or as a number 10, and could probably operate in a more advanced role as a second striker if required.

All of that is great, but when Rafa Benitez needs an instant impact from his new star man then he could really do without a period of trial and error.

Based on the cameo performance Almiron put in on his debut against Wolves on Monday night, however, the solution should be a fairy obvious one – let him do what he wants.

It may sound naive or reckless, but the 24-year-old’s inexhaustible energy and unquenchable desire to be in possession would make him the ideal floater in a forward line.

His pace and creativity are a constant threat and allowing him to wander the final third, popping up in pockets of space when required and exploiting gaps opportunistically.

That kind of role would also make him a nightmare to pickup for opposition defenders, and would give him more chances to get on the ball and hurt teams.

If Newcastle are to turn a corner they must use Almiron to his full potential, and that means setting him free.
