Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez is hoping to wrap up deals for Atlanta United forward Miguel Almiron and Monaco left-back Antonio Barreca by the end of the day (Wednesday), according to the Chronicle

The regional newspaper report that both players are booked into a Tyneside hotel, with confirmation of their signings expected to come within 24 hours.

The Chronicle claim that there could be another signing on the way on deadline day (Thursday) with the Magpies also locked in talks with Benfica regarding a deal for midfielder Andreas Samaris.

Finally there looks to be some genuine transfer movement on Tyneside after so many weeks of empty speculation. The deal for Atlanta star Almiron is obviously the biggest news, with manager Rafa Benitez having identified the Paraguay international as his top target for several months now. It had looked like a deal was dead in the water, with Newcastle initially refusing to up their bid, but significant progress looks to have been made in the last day or so. He will totally reinvigorate a struggling Newcastle attack, but may take a bit of time to adapt to the Premier League as he makes the jump from MLS. Barreca on the other hand will strengthen the squad at left-back, which is an area that desperately needs reinforcing. Paul Dummett is the club’s only natural player in that position, and the signing of Barreca will hopefully ease the pressure on the left side of defence.
