Newcastle United have agreed a deal to take Lazio left-back Jordan Lukaku on loan for the season, according to Gianluca di Marzio.

The reliable journalist wrote on his personal website that the Magpies have taken the 24-year-old to St James’ Park on a temporary basis until the summer, when they would then have the option to turn his switch into a permanent one.

Lukaku has only made seven appearances in all competitions in Italy this season, but di Marzio has said that he will be joining his brother Romelu Lukaku in the Premier League.

OPINION

This move makes absolute sense from a Newcastle perspective at the moment. The club are in desperate need of a left-back to add to their thread bare squad, so the agreement to take Lukaku on loan has come just at the right time. He may not have enjoyed the best of times in Serie A this season with only a handful of appearances to his name, but that does not mean he will not be a good signing for the Magpies. It was his good form that got him a move to Lazio in the first place, so if he manages to find that again, then plenty of the fans are in for a real treat. He is quite the talent on his good day, and although he does not have quite the same level of quality as his brother, he will be a welcome addition to the club. With Javier Manquillo the only cover available for first choice Paul Dummett, having Lukaku on the books will certainly help provide the depth needed to survive another season in the top-flight.
