Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has revealed that both Federico Fernandez and Kenedy could start the FA Cup fourth round clash against Watford this weekend.

The Magpies duo missed last weekend’s 3-0 win over Cardiff due to acquiring viruses [Shields Gazette], but the Spanish manager has now said that the two players are possible starters for the fixture at St James’ Park.

The Spaniard had hoped to have them both available to play in Saturday’s vital victory, but they had to pull out the day before the match.

However, they are in contention to face the Hornets, as relayed by Chronicle reporter Lee Ryder on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

It will be a major boost for Benitez to have these two players back in contention for Saturday, but more so Fernandez than Kenedy. Kenedy has been woeful for the majority of this season, and it has been evident that he has not been missed in the slightest in the midfield. However, Benitez may opt to start him in this match, especially with the ongoing injuries to players such as Mo Diame and Ki Sung-Yueng. Nevertheless, Fernandez has been a big miss, and it will give the manager a chance to rotate his centre-backs a little bit. Florian Lejeune has been excellent since his return from injury, so it would be wise to give him a break so that Fernandez can get some minutes under his belt. He has been one of Newcastle’s best summer signings this season, but competition for a spot at centre-back is rife – something he no doubt recognises himself. Benitez is lucky that he is spoiled for choice in this department – something which he would want to be blessed with in every area on the pitch.
