Newcastle United right back DeAndre Yedlin has praised his fellow defender Fabian Schar for the impact he has made at St James’ Park.
The Switzerland international grabbed the headlines with a phenomenal brace in his team’s 3-0 win over Cardiff City last weekend, continuing an impressive run of form of late.
Yedlin has been extremely impressed by his team mate: “People are starting to see what he can do now,” he told The Chronicle. “He is great on the ball.
“He is a good defender and he is very important to this team.”

It’s been quite the last month or so for Schar. For someone who has struggled for first team minutes at times this campaign, he has really become a vital part of the operation at St James’ Park in recent weeks. Never was that exemplified more, of course, than against Cardiff last time out. He took the game by the scruff of the neck and decided its outcome almost single-handedly. He is a top class defender and we are starting to see that now. Yedlin clearly appreciates his efforts and why wouldn’t he? The American is playing his best football of the season next to Schar in a five man backline. There is no doubt that the Swiss star is the best defender on-the-ball that Newcastle have at this moment in time, and that gives an added dimension to Rafael Benitez’s side. Hopefully he can continue on the run of form he has been on because he’s been magnificent recently.
