Former Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney has suggested that he should have been given more of a chance to prove himself, and that him leaving was the club’s loss.

The 22-year-old made a permanent move to Peterborough over the summer after having made just four senior appearances for the Magpies.

Toney has scored 17 goals in all competitions this season, and speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “Obviously it’s a hard decision to leave a big club like that I believed that I was good enough to play there, but the management and people at the top didn’t see that.

“It was tough but it is all part of the game and part of the experience.

“I wasn’t involved with the first team [in the summer] so it was time for me to move on to somewhere I could get going. Now I have come here and managed to score a few goals.

“You need to be given the chance to prove yourself and I don’t think I was given that opportunity. but I guess it is their loss in the end.”

OPINION

Toney clearly has a lot of belief in his own ability, and he has proven that he is a natural goalscorer this season, but there’s big difference between making it in the Premier League and League One. Whether or not he could have cut it as the Magpies main source of goals is all hypothetical now that he’s left, but he’s performed well enough this season to suggest that he should have at least been given a chance on Tyneside. The Toon Army have struggled for goals this season, and lack any real alternatives to Salomon Rondon up front, with Joselu in particular consistently underwhelming, and having Toney as an option coming off the bench would have been a valuable weapon in the battle for survival. The Magpies might rue his departure even more if they do go down, as everything points to the 22-year-old being a good asset for any football league side.
