It is no secret that Newcastle United do not have the most mind-blowing attack in the Premier League.

After all, that is what you get when you have the likes of Salomon Rondon and Joselu as the two main strikers – two players who are hardly known for their prolific form.

According to the Telegraph, Southampton striker Charlie Austin is set to leave the South Coast club in this transfer window, with the likes of Wolves and Aston Villa put on high alert for his services.

This is a situation that the Magpies must take advantage of as soon as possible – even though Austin is not the most deadliest of forwards, he does have the knack of being in the right place at the right time, as well as popping up with important goals.

He proved just that against Brighton earlier on in the season, scoring the winner to put the Saints through to the next round of the Carabao Cup.

Either way, he is just the player that Newcastle need at this stage of the campaign, as the burden needs to be eased on Rondon to deliver the goods that the fans so desperately want.

Seeing as the 29-year-old is on £70,000-a-week [Spotrac] at St Mary’s, there is no excuse for Newcastle not to match his wages, as well as his potential transfer fee – and they must open talks with him swiftly, as his contract expires in the summer.

He will likely benefit playing in a team that has the likes of Rondon in it, and the supporters will likely be rejoicing as they see their goal tally rise.

Austin is not a stellar signing, but he is a signing who has the potential to make a significant impact at St James’ Park – so Rafa Benitez must get the fans bouncing by bringing Austin in.
