It’s a bit surprising to see the Newcastle United fans criticise Isaac Hayden so vehemently for his performance in the Magpies’ 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday. The former Arsenal man actually played pretty well alongside the young Sean Longstaff in central midfield. Newcastle were always going to be up against it with Longstaff and Hayden in central midfield against N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho, but they actually performed pretty well for the most part. There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding Hayden at the moment but he continues to try his best and puts in solid, workmanlike performances. The 23-year-old certainly wasn’t the reason for Newcastle’s defeat at Stamford Bridge. Ultimately, though, many supporters have already made up their mind about the player so he can’t win. Still, he played fairly well and his manager will be pleased with him. It wasn’t the result that Rafael Benitez’s side wanted, but Hayden certainly put a good shift in.
