OPINION
Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar was the star of his team’s 3-0 victory over Cardiff City on Saturday, there’s no doubt about that. He opened the scoring in the first half with a fabulous solo effort, dribbling past several Cardiff players before slotting the ball cooly into the bottom corner of the net. He then unbelievably added a second to put the game to bed. He has been an absolute bargain for the Magpies and Rafael Benitez will be hugely pleased with his efforts against the Bluebirds. He offers so much to this Newcastle team because, not only is he a solid centre half, but he has enviable passing ability. He can get attacks going from the back or, as he did at St James’ Park, he can bring it out from the back himself and put it in the back of the net. Benitez has a coterie of quality centre backs at his disposal, but Schar will have done his chances of continued involvement no harm with a tremendous performance against Neil Warnock’s side.
