Newcastle United are interested in a move for Borussia Dortmund striker Maximilian Philipp, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the Magpies have the 24-year-old on their radar this month as they look to make attacking additions.

Rafael Benitez’s side have previously sent scouts to watch the German, and could now move for him with Dortmund open to allowing him to leave.

The Bundesliga leaders are said to value the former Freiburg man at around £19million, with Turkish sides Besiktas and German outfit Hannover also thought to be interested.

OPINION

Newcastle certainly need to bring in some attacking reinforcements this month, having struggled desperately in the final third in the first half of the season, but Philipp probably isn’t the man. He has never been a prolific scorer and that is what the Magpies need at this moment in time. They don’t need another striker who works hard for the team but doesn’t score with regularity, they have that already with Salomon Rondon and Joselu. They need someone who is going to put the ball in the back of the net with regularity and Phillip has shown nothing to suggest that he can do that. Also, when was the last time Newcastle bought someone for £19million? Precisely never. Unless the Magpies can negotiate a loan with an option to buy deal, there seems to be no way that this one happens. There must be better targets who would be more well suited to what the club need at this moment in time.
