OPINION

With Newcastle United’s relegation survival hopes hanging on by a thread, you would think that adding reinforcements in the January transfer window would be paramount.

That is why it is important for the Magpies to add reinforcements to their back four – and although finding a left-back is vital, finding a right-back is just as crucial.

DeAndre Yedlin is the only right-back of the club of decent quality, as Javier Manquillo is hardly up to the job, after all, in the times he has been called upon, he has been shockingly woeful.

That is why is makes sense for United to swoop for Southampton right-back Cedric Soares, who is set to be sold in order to make way for the Saints’ potential capture of Joakim Maehle according to the Daily Mail.

The 27-year-old has made 21 appearances in all competitions for the South Coast club, but it now looks like his days are finally numbered at St Mary’s.

Soares is a very similar player to Yedlin, mainly due to the fact that he has the same attacking mindset at as the USA international – something the Newcastle fans will love to watch.

Benitez would be counting his lucky stars if the club managed to secure a swoop for the £65,000-a-week [Spotrac] defender, because despite the fact he is being overlooked by current Southampton boss Ralph Hassenhuttl, he would be quite the coup.

If the club did manage to bring Soares to St James’ Park, then the manager would be one step closer to completing the puzzle that is the Newcastle team – all he would need then is a left-back, winger and an attacking midfielder.

Benitez would play a blinder if he sealed a swoop for the Portuguese – so he must get going as soon as possible.
