Newcastle United have finally splashed the cash after confirming the signing of Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United.

The 24-year-old playmaker has been a long-term target for Magpies boss Rafa Benitez, who is known to have been tracking him for a year.

The Paraguay international is coming off a huge season with Atlanta, scoring 13 goals and laying on 13 assists as he helped lead them to an MLS Cup triumph.

Obviously it may take time for Almiron to settle into Premier League football, with the exciting talent having only ever played in South and North America, but this does look to be a top signing for the Magpies regardless.

One remaining issue here is the fee, with the suggestion that Newcastle have broken their transfer record to sign the silky-skilled Paraguayan.

The Chronicle shed light on the situation, revealing that the Magpies have in fact paid just £16million up front for Almiron, with the fee potentially rising to £21million with add-ons.

That means this is almost inevitable to become a club-record deal, even if that record still remains in tact for now.

It also shows how clever the Magpies have been in negotiating the financials, with an initial outlay of £16million representing some really good business.

If Almiron does not reach expectations, then they shouldn’t end up paying much more than that for the 24-year-old, which could save them several million pounds.

Obviously the hope is that Almiron exceeds expectations and goes on to become a brilliant player in the black and white stripes, but the club have done well to cover themselves in the event that does not happen.

All in all the Magpies have, finally, played a blinder in the transfer market, and hopefully that shows on the pitch in the coming months as they try to avoid a dogfight against relegation.
