Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff must now be considered undroppable by Rafa Benitez after an excellent showing against Blackburn Rovers.

The 21-year-old talent was head and shoulders above his teammates during the 4-2 win on Tuesday night, and alongside Cal Roberts, looks like he is becoming a key player for the Magpies.

Longstaff has made several senior appearances – coming in the FA Cup and in the Premier League, most notably against Chelsea – and he has exceeded expectations in all the starts he has been handed.

The midfielder is composed on the ball, has a fantastic workrate and is even capable of scoring goals, just as he demonstrated against the Championship opponents.

Yes, admittedly his strike took a deflection on the way in, but it would have done him the world of confidence.

What was seen as a rookie in the first team is now quickly establishing themselves as undroppable for Benitez and crucial to the success of the starting XI.

Look at the way he coped against Chelsea last Saturday – thrown in at the deep end against some of the league’s best players, and somehow came out with an impressive display.

His recent performance against Blackburn has only reinforced the fact that he is perfect for the Premier League, and he is just what Benitez needs with a few of his key midfielders missing.

That is not to say that he will make way for those midfielders upon their returns – if anything, they are the ones that should be working hard to earn their places ahead of the 5ft 11in [Transfermarkt] ace.

Nevertheless, if there is one thing we have learnt about the youngster, it is that he has taken the transition from the under-23s to the senior team rather well, and that only looks set to continue after is undroppable display.
