It is very important that managers select the right loan moves for their young players. Some environments are right for youngsters to develop in and others simply are not.

Newcastle United should be very wary, then, about accepting any loan approach from Blackpool for teenage striker Elias Sorensen. Tangerines boss Terry McPhillips confirmed recently that he was monitoring the Magpies hotshot.

“We are interested in him, yes, but so are a number of other clubs so we won’t get too excited about that unless it happens,” he told the Blackpool Gazette.

Blackpool, simply put, is not the right place for Sorensen at this moment in time. The club is in absolute turmoil, with the supporters in open revolt against the club’s ownership. Does that sound like a good environment for a 19-year-old to try and make his mark?

Fans of the club have been boycotting games recently, including their FA Cup tie against Premier League Arsenal earlier this month, and there seems to be no end to the battle between the supporters and ownership.

To throw Sorensen into that mix, when there will undoubtedly be offers for him from elsewhere, would be absolute madness. The club’s position in the Football League also marks them out as being a bad move for the attacker.

League One could also be a division too high for Sorensen at this moment in time. He is a tremendous young talent, but his game needs obvious refinement.

He would be much better off enjoying a period away from St James’ Park at a League Two club. The level there would be perfect for him. Not too easy, like non league, but not too difficult, like League One.

He is a natural goalscorer but he does have a tendency to go missing in matches for the under-23s. It would be good for him to improve his all-round game for a mid table League Two side where the stakes aren’t terribly high this season.

Blackpool will still have aspirations of making it into the League One play-offs, there won’t be time for them to tutor the young man and help him develop. He would be far better off a division below.

For these reasons a potential switch to Bloomfield Road must be avoided like the plague, otherwise Newcastle could end up kicking themselves in a few months time.
