Newcastle United have made an approach to sign Lyon striker Martin Terrier on loan until the end of the season, according to L’Equipe.

The newspaper claims that Rafael Benitez has observed the 21-year-old on several occasions, seemingly being impressed enough to propose a deal for him.

The Spaniard is said to have identified Terrier as someone who can play just off main striker Salomon Rondon, and has been convinced by the youngster’s potential.

However, it is believed that the French giants are not keen on allowing the player to leave the club.

OPINION

This is an interesting one. It was expected that Newcastle would enter the loan market in the final few days of the transfer window due to owner Mike Ashley’s disinclination to spend money. Also, the club already have the maximum of two registered domestic loans, meaning that they would have to look abroad for temporary signings. It appears that that is what they have done. The club desperately need some attacking reinforcements, someone to put pressure on Ayoze Perez as the ‘second striker’. Terrier could potentially do that, but he is not a proven goalscorer by any stretch of the imagination. He has scored four goals in 21 appearances in all competitions this season, albeit from limited minutes. That’s not a tally which suggests he’s going to come in and fire the Magpies up the table. He may well be a talented young player, but he seems like he would be a big risk for a club that needs proven commodity at this stage of the season.
