Football is very much a business of ‘what have you done for me lately?’ However, that policy can’t be employed all the time, especially for teams in need of a little bit of a inspiration.

Which is why Newcastle United should consider taking a punt on out of favour Paris Saint-Germain winger Jese Rodriguez, who had a loan spell with then-Premier League side Stoke City last season.

Admittedly, on paper this doesn’t look like a great move. This is a man who hasn’t played a competitive first team game since appearing for 11 minutes against Everton in March of last year. He is yet to feature since returning to the French champions ahead of this campaign.

However, the Magpies are slightly desperate, and he does remain a talented player. If someone, like his fellow Spaniard Rafael Benitez for example, can unlock his quality then they’ll have quite the player on their hands.

Seeing as he hasn’t played for PSG this term you can safely assume that the French side will be open to loaning him out this month, thus ensuring that Magpies owner Mike Ashley doesn’t have to part with any of his precious cash in order to sign him.

The situation on the wings has been dire for Newcastle this season. Kenedy has been woeful, Christian Atsu inconsistent and Jacob Murphy just plain dispiriting.

Jese is at least a high calibre alternative to those players. He has immense pedigree, having been at Real Madrid when they won two Champions League trophies, a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey and a Coupe de la Ligue in France.

None of Newcastle’s wingers have achieved anything near to that in their careers and, while that’s not a reason in and of itself to sign him, the fact remains that you don’t play for Real Madrid and PSG if you’re a bad player.

It’s all about getting him back to the level he was once at, and there’s no doubt that Benitez is capable of doing that. He gets performances from poor players each and every week which are way beyond their capabilities, imagine what he could do with someone of Jese’s quality.

If the Magpies can get Jese in and let Benitez work his magic on him then his arrival really could kick-start the club’s season. It’s surely worth the risk at this point.
