Newcastle United could pull off a massive coup by making a move for Manchester United starlet Demitri Mitchell.

The 22-year-old was named United’s reserve team player of the year last season, and was included in the Reds’ preseason tour of America, but has not been able to make his breakthrough into the first team during a tumultuous campaign at Old Trafford.

The England youth international is out of contract at the end of this season, and has been impressing in Scotland where he’s on loan at Hearts.

However, he could be available on a cut-price deal if the Reds do decide to cash in on their academy graduate.

According to The Mirror (15.12), Burnley and Bournemouth are already monitoring his situation, but the Magpies must beat their Premier League rivals to the punch in signing a player that would solve a lot of their current issues.

Rafa Benitez has made no secret of the fact that he wants to recruit a left-back this January as cover for Paul Dummett, and has lacked creative output in wide positions for much of this season, with Kenedy, Jacob Murphy, and Christian Atsu all disappointing consistently.

Mitchell is a versatile player, capable of playing anywhere down the left flank, and while he may be unproven at senior level, his youth career and the pedigree of United’s academy suggest that he could be a star in the making.

Benitez should invest quickly.
