Newcastle must go in for Mikel

Newcastle United could solve their midfield crisis with a January move for former Chelsea man John Obi-Mikel.

The 31-year-old is without a club since leaving Chinese side Tianjin Teda, and is a reported target for fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace, according to TEAMtalk.

If the Nigerian international can be tempted back to England, then the Magpies should make sure that they are first in line for his signature.

Rafa Benitez worked with the two-time Champions League winner during his spell at Stamford Bridge, and should utilise that working relationship to bring in a player who could be crucial to his current side’s survival hopes.

Mikel is a solid and imposing central midfielder who would sure up the centre of the park for a Magpies team who look threadbare in the engine room.

The Super Eagles’ captain has played at World Cups and won a Champions League, and that kind of elite level experience could be the kind of quality injection the Toon Army need to elevate them out of their current slump.

Funds are bound to be in short supply on Tyneside this winter, and a move for a free agent makes a lot of sense.

If Benitez swoops he could pull off a masterstroke.
