OPINION

Ciaran Clark was recalled to the Newcastle United starting lineup to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday evening, but it is fair to say his first 45 minutes back was a mixed bag. The Republic of Ireland international was playing as part of a back three alongside Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune, and had a dodgy start defensively as he lost Pedro racing through, with the Spaniard latching onto a brilliant ball from David Luiz to open the scoring inside the first 10 minutes. There were other mistakes made in the first half from Newcastle but his was the most costly. Luckily the centre-back then made amends late on in the half as his bullet header put the Magpies level. His goal unfortunately did not prevent some Newcastle fans for slamming his defensive work, and that is understandable. Out of all the options which Rafa Benitez has at centre-back, it is fair to say that Clark is the least consistent, and the decision to start him ahead of Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez looks a strange one from Rafa Benitez, despite his goal.
