Newcastle United’s U-21s took on Sunderland in the third round of the Checkatrade Trophy in a game that was always going to peak the interest of both sets of supporters. Everyone knows how fierce the rivalry is between the two clubs and it was on show even when it was the Magpies’ U-21s in action. Sunderland beat the Magpies’ youth team 4-0 on Tuesday in a result that didn’t really shock anyone. This is because it was Sunderland’s first-team, with a few changes, taking on the Magpies’ U-21s so the League One side should have always been expected to win. However several Magpies fans were particularly outraged by the fact that Sunderland winger Chris Maguire celebrated his goal by shushing Magpies supporters and putting his hands to his ears. One Magpies fan dubbed the player a sad little man while another somewhat needlessly took a dig at the player’s weight. While it’s understandable why Maguire’s antics had fans calling it the 29-year-old’s career highlight, as that’s an amusing cheeky dig to tear the player apart, one supporter may have gone a little over the top by claiming that the winger’s actions were mortifying.
