Newcastle United winger Cal Roberts has admitted that he is open to leaving the club on loan in search of increased first team opportunities.

The 21-year-old started the 4-2 win over Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night and was one of the four players to make the scoresheet, but the youngster has said if he is not given enough minutes in the first team, a loan move is a likely possibility – and Roberts added that he will see where his imminent future with the Magpies lies later this week.

He has netted 13 goals in all competitions this season for the under-23s, bar the recent one on Tuesday.

“Obviously the aim is to play in the first team. If that is not possible I will think about loan options. I will see what happens in the next few days,” he said, as quoted by the Chronicle live blog [16/1, 11.02am].

OPINION

Despite the fact that he delivered an assured performance on Tuesday, who can blame Roberts for wanting a move away? There is no guarantee that Rafa Benitez is going to hand him further first team opportunities imminently, even if he was one of Newcastle’s best players against Blackburn. Obviously he does not warrant being dropped, but Benitez may want to be cautious with his team selections heading into the rest of the season. He may be given the chance to play at the moment – after all, there are a few notable absentees in the midfield – but once they return, who knows whether he will be axed or not? He needs stability in order to maintain his excellent progress and it is hard to tell whether he will get that by remaining at Newcastle this season. Going on loan may help improve him and give him the confidence to come back and fight for his spot in the starting XI – so watch this space.
